We have a product called Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) that we would like to introduce to you. BHT is a substance that you should be aware of and explore further. It is an antioxidant that has numerous applications and benefits.
To give you a brief overview, BHT is a chemical compound commonly used as a food additive, preservative, and stabilizer. It is derived from toluene and is primarily used to prevent oxidation and spoilage in various products. BHT is particularly effective in maintaining the freshness and quality of food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
The key feature of BHT is its antioxidant properties. It acts as a free radical scavenger, which means it helps prevent or slow down the damage caused by reactive molecules in the body. In the food industry, it is often added to oils, fats, and processed foods to extend their shelf life by preventing rancidity. This ensures that the products remain safe for consumption for a longer period.
Furthermore, BHT is widely used in the cosmetic industry. It is incorporated into various beauty and personal care products such as lip balms, lotions, and makeup to prevent the oxidation of oils and other components. This not only helps maintain the product's stability but also prolongs its effectiveness.
In addition to its use in food and cosmetics, BHT is also found in the pharmaceutical industry. It can be found in medications, vitamins, and supplements as a preservative to maintain their potency and prevent degradation.
However, it is important to note that while BHT is generally recognized as safe for consumption and use, excessive or prolonged exposure to high levels of BHT may have potential health concerns. Some studies have suggested that BHT may have negative effects on the liver and may act as an endocrine disruptor, although further research is needed to fully understand these potential risks.
In conclusion, Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a versatile compound with antioxidant properties that finds applications in various industries. Its ability to prevent oxidation and extend shelf life make it a valuable ingredient in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. However, it is essential to use BHT responsibly and ensure that exposure levels are within acceptable limits to minimize any potential risks.

Applications of BHT

BHT, also known as butylated hydroxytoluene, is an extensively utilized antioxidant compound in diverse sectors. Its main purpose is to forestall the spoilage and decline in quality of products containing fats and oils by preventing oxidation and degradation. This chemical compound appears as a white or slightly yellowish powder, and although it is not soluble in water, it can dissolve in fats and oils. The food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical industries, among others, widely employ BHT to meet their needs.

BHT can also be used in lubricating oil, secondary processing and petrol, paraffin, mineral oils, polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, ABS resin, polyester resin, cellulose, plastic foam as an antioxidant stabilizer.

BHT is a non-polluting anti-oxidant stabilizer for natural rubber, butadiene rubber, styrene butadiene rubber, neoprene, nitrile rubber, butyl rubber, isoprene rubber, ethylene propylene rubber, transformer oil, all kinds of latex products, especially white or light color ones.

Why does feed storage need BHT antioxidant ?

Feed storage needs BHT antioxidant to prevent the oxidation of feed, which can lead to rancidity and spoilage. BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used in animal feed and pet food to prevent the breakdown of fatty acids and maintain the nutritional quality of the feed. Without an antioxidant like BHT, feed can become rancid and develop an unpleasant taste and odor, which can affect animal palatability and consumption. Additionally, the oxidation of feed can lead to the formation of harmful compounds such as free radicals and peroxides, which can have negative health effects on animals. Therefore, BHT is added to feed as a preventive measure to ensure the safety, quality, and palatability of animal feed.

CH3(C6H4)OH + 2 CH2=C(CH3)2 → ((CH3)3C)2CH3C6H2OH

BHT used in Food:

BHT is primarily used as an antioxidant food additive. In the United States, it is classified as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) based on a National Cancer Institute study from 1979 in rats and mice. It is approved for use in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration: For example, 21 CFR § 137.350(a)(4) allows BHT up to 0.0033% by weight in "enriched rice", while 9 CFR § 381.147](f)(1) allows up to 0.01% in poultry "by fat content".It is permitted in the European Union under E321.
