HEDP, also known as HEDP(A) or HEDPA, is an organic phosphonic acid compound that is commonly used as a chelating agent in various applications. Additional names for this versatile acid include Etidronic Acid, 1-Hydroxy Ethylidene-1,1-Diphosphonic Acid, and Hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonicacid(HEDP) among others.
This compound is excellent at preventing the buildup of scale and corrosion in water systems and is widely used in many industries including oil and gas, cooling water treatment, and metal treatment. Its effectiveness as a sequestrant makes it an ideal choice in detergents and cleaning products as well.
1-Hydroxyethylidenediphosphonic Acid, which is another common name for HEDP, is a highly stable compound that is notable for its ability to form strong complexes with metal ions. This property, combined with its excellent solubility and biodegradability, make HEDP an attractive option for various industrial and household applications.
In summary, HEDP or its various derivatives is a versatile, highly effective, and widely used acid for managing scale, corrosion, and metal-ion sequestration. Its numerous benefits, availability, and ease of use make it a go-to solution for the challenges of many industries.

HEDP, also known as hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid, is a chemical compound used in various industrial applications. It is an important chelating agent that can bind with metal ions and prevent them from reacting with other chemicals. One of its derivatives is OEDP, or oxyethylidenediphosphonic acid. This acid has similar properties to HEDP, but is modified to provide additional benefits depending on the specific application. In Russian, OEDF-kislotais the equivalent term for oxyethylidenediphosphonic acid. Regardless of the specific name used, these compounds are powerful tools for protecting equipment and maintaining chemical stability in a variety of settings.

Properties

HEDP is a type of corrosion inhibitor known as an organophosphoric acid. It is effective in preventing corrosion by forming stable chelating compounds with iron, copper, and zinc ions. Additionally, it has the ability to dissolve oxidized materials present on the surfaces of these metals. Remarkably, HEDP exhibits remarkable scale and corrosion inhibition properties even at high temperatures of up to 250℃. Moreover, it demonstrates excellent chemical stability at high pH levels, making it resistant to hydrolysis and decomposition under normal light and heat conditions.
Its resistance to acid/alkali and chlorine oxidation is superior to other organophosphoric acids or salts. This characteristic allows HEDP to react with metal ions in water systems, thereby forming a chelating complex consisting of six elements. Of particular note is its ability to form a complex with calcium ions. This feature contributes to its exceptional anti-scaling effects and visible threshold effects. Furthermore, when combined with other water treatment chemicals, HEDP exhibits synergistic effects, enhancing its overall performance as a corrosion inhibitor.

In freezing districts during winter, the crystalline powder form of HEDP is an excellent choice. Its purity level is high enough for it to be used as a cleaning agent in electronic industries, as well as an additive in daily chemical products.

Usage

HEDP is used as scale and corrosion inhibition in circulating cool water system, oil field and low-pressure boilers in fields such as electric power, chemical industry, metallurgy, fertilizer, etc.. In light woven industry, HEDP is used as detergent for metal and nonmetal. In dyeing industry, HEDP is used as peroxide stabilizer and dye-fixing agent; In non-cyanide electroplating, HEDP is used as chelating agent. The dosage of 1-10mg/L is preferred as scale inhibitor, 10-50mg/L as corrosion inhibitor, and 1000-2000mg/L as detergent. Usually, HEDP is used together with polycarboxylic acid.
